New Year, New Routine: Creating Healthy Habits for You and Your Dog
As we welcome the start of 2025, we are excited to share ways that you and your dog can create and commit to healthy habits. When it comes to establishing habits, every day counts. By starting small and prioritizing one daily goal, whether it is walking a certain number of steps per day or engaging in a 15-minute play session with your fluffy friend, you are on the right track to making a lasting habit with your consistency.
Daily Exercise Goals: Get Moving Together
Exercise is at the top of many people’s list of resolutions, but it’s easy to fall off track if the goals aren’t manageable. A fun way to stay on target is to set daily fitness goals for both you and your dog, making exercise a bonding experience.
Tip 1: Start with Walks
Aim for daily walks or runs. Whether it’s a brisk 30-minute stroll or a longer adventure, walking provides both you and your dog with physical exercise and the mental stimulation needed for a healthy start to the day. You could set a goal of 10,000 steps per day—if you’re consistent with walking your dog, you’re well on your way to hitting that target!
Tip 2: Interactive Play
Dogs love to play, and engaging in play sessions is a great way for you both to get your hearts pumping. Throw a ball, play tug-of-war, or use puzzle toys to challenge their brain and body. Start with short 10-15 minute playtimes and gradually increase as you both build stamina.
Tip 3: Fitness Goals Together
If you’re already engaged in a fitness routine you enjoy and want to maintain, consider incorporating your dog into your workouts. Take your pup on a run, do a quick agility session at a dog park, or stretch with your dog during yoga. They can even do modified “dog yoga” with you!
Mindfulness in Routine: Build Emotional Health
Physical health is essential, but emotional well-being should never be overlooked. Practicing mindfulness and setting aside time to relax together can help both you and your dog feel more centered and at ease in the new year.
Tip 1: Mindful Walks
Instead of rushing through your walks, take time to engage all your senses. Slow down and enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells around you. Let your dog explore at their own pace, and allow yourself to be present in the moment. These mindful walks help reduce stress and enhance your connection with your dog.
Tip 2: Slow Feeding
Many dogs gobble up their food too quickly, leading to digestion issues. Consider a slow feeder bowl or puzzle feeder to make mealtime a more mindful activity. For you, try eating without distractions. Focus on enjoying each bite and practicing mindful eating.
Tip 3: Meditation and Relaxation
Incorporate moments of relaxation into your routine. Try a meditation session with your dog by your side or set up a calming space where you both can unwind. Dogs are very intuitive, and simply being near you while you meditate or journal can help them feel calm and relaxed as well.
Consistency is Key: Stick to a Routine
Consistency is essential for both dogs and owners. Just like you, dogs thrive on routine—it creates a sense of security, reduces anxiety, and helps them know what to expect each day.
Tip 1: Set Regular Schedules
Try to wake up, eat, exercise, and go to bed at roughly the same time every day. Dogs are creatures of habit, and maintaining a steady schedule will help them feel more grounded and content. Whether you’re starting your day with a morning walk or winding down with a relaxation session, having structure in your day ensures you’re both consistently prioritizing your health.
Tip 2: Involve Your Dog in Goal-Setting
Don’t forget that dogs love to be a part of your goals too! Involve your dog in your daily routines. For example, set the goal of taking your dog for a walk first thing in the morning. You’ll find that by including your dog in your morning habits, you’re more likely to stay on track with your routine. They can help you wake up early and get that fresh air to start the day.
Tip 3: Socialization and Community
A great way to stick with your new healthy routine is to include others. Plan walks, playdates, or hikes with friends who also have dogs. This not only makes exercise more fun, but it’s also a great opportunity for both you and your dog to socialize and build a sense of community
